Intro to PNI for Health ConsumersSelected References for Psychoneuroimmunology and Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management The research presented in these articles has shown that individuals will vary in their immunological reaction to stress. This variance seems to be predicated on inheritance that determines at least gender, personality, and immune system predispositions, and the nature of the stressor. Individuals filter the meaning of the stressor through its social context and arrive at a cognitive interpretation that may vary in time as coping mechanisms are brought to bear. All of these variables will interact to determine the impact of stress on an individual immune response. And the nature of the stress-modified immune response may have a significant influence on our psychosocial and physical well-being. Influences on our well-being relative to specific diseases are briefly reviewed below. And some of the evidence for the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy or cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) interventions upon mitigating specific disease processes or maintaining health is discussed.
For a more comprehensive discussion of these topics, you may want to read the articles in the HHTC Webpages for professional health care workers or in Psychoneuroimmunology for the Health Sciences.
