Psychoneuroimmunology
for the Health Sciences Psychoneuroimmunology for the Health Sciences(A Reference or e-Textbook)Within the last few years, the importance of teaching psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) has been recognized at numerous institutions of higher learning. This recognition has been driven by health consumers and practitioners as they encounter various aspects of PNI under the guise of complementary and alternative medicine. At this writing, searching the Internet for PNI related courses reveals thousands of hits in America, Europe and Asia. Curricula range from general courses such as health psychology to PNI specific courses for health practitioners and scientists. Emphasis seems to be in exploring the relationship between behaviors and physical health as well as psychological aspects and management of health and illness behaviors. In this environment, we believe there are two homes for this book. One is a text for courses in PNI and the other is a reference volume for health practitioners or researchers. In the later category are those who finished their formal training before the current interest in PNI and evidence based medicine. Diverse backgrounds (e.g., psychologists, physicians, graduate and medical students, some upper level undergraduates, and researchers in allied fields) call out for a text that covers sufficient basic immunology, neurology, and endocrinology as well as specific PNI topics. In addition, students of PNI in the health sciences can benefit by concise synopses that are seldom covered together. These include examination of fundamental concepts in scientific reasoning, evidence based medicine, health science related biostatistics, and quality control on clinical judgment. Unlike other treatises on PNI, we have not shied away from controversial areas. Instead of repeating conventional wisdom, we have gone back to the original literature. Under the bright light of science some oft-repeated beliefs have been revealed to have little basis in reality. And other areas have been shown to contain tantalizing glimpses of a different reality. After presenting the best available scientific data, we have left it to the reader to apply the principles of evidence-based medicine to these subjects. And to formulate their own opinions. For those who are using this book outside of the classroom, we can imagine that some people can read this book without resorting to these background sections. Others may want to use these sections as a refresher, a dictionary, or quick reference encyclopedia. In any event, we are mindful that the best textbooks that we have used have ended up as well worn reference books. In this context, the background sections may prove the worth of this book as the field matures. Central to this target audience are applications of PNI in the practice of medicine. This volume will explore PNI as it relates to health-enhancing and health-compromising behaviors, and health psychology in health care, especially concerning seriously ill or terminal patients. So, you will find practical and useful suggestions incorporated in various areas especially in the final section. That section is designed to help maximize benefit from the information discussed in the other chapters and help make the tough times easier when operating within the health care system.
This book’s primary incarnation is an interactive electronic book (e-Book). To achieve this goal, we have incorporated or have made provisions for the following.
