Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management for Healthy FolksHow well does cognitive behavioral stress management (CBSM) work with a population not suffering from a disease? Here are a few studies. Students and CBSMA 4-week CBSM intervention was begun 8 weeks before a group of 28-healthy economic students were to take an important stressful examination (). The students who received the CBSM vs. the wait-list controls showed significantly less anxiety and somatic symptoms during the 8 weeks and lower morning salivary cortisol on the day of the exam. The CBSM group showed congruency with their cognitive stress appraisal and cortisol levels, whereas the wait-list controls dissociated the cortisol response from the cognitive stress appraisal. Non-smoking, apparently healthy, male students who were treated with CBSM, registered less stress by self-appraisal and lower salivary cortisol levels than controls when confronted with a standardized psychosocial stress test (). Athletes and CBSMAn RCT of athletes who received CBSM showed, relative to controls, significantly fewer illnesses and injury, and one-half the number of visits to the university health center (). Men and women (n=34) rowers who were undergoing heavy exercise training were randomly assigned to either CBSM or a control group (). After controlling for life-event stress, the CBSM group showed significant decreases in depressed mood, fatigue, and cortisol. And, the reduction in negative mood and fatigue were significantly associated with decreased cortisol. |
