All of our programs are based upon the best current science. When you click on the hyperlinks embedded in the program descriptions you will go to specific data sources related to that evidence for modifying stress and improving immune responses.
We offer a core curriculum of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
- This typically takes the form of multimodal Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management (CBSM), or Trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy/exposure therapy (TFCBT) for PTSD
- For our groups, CBSM is patterned after the evidenced based programs of Group-Experienced Therapy for Stress Management and Relaxation Training (Get SMART) and for breast cancer B-SMART (The SMART programs were developed by Michael Antoni, Bonnie McGregor and their colleagues at the University of Miami (1774375, 1320279, 9103732, 11199062).
- CBSM has been used for
- In addition to those conditions listed above for CBSM, CBT has been used for
- TFCBT uses cognitive behavioral therapy plus experiential or trauma focused techniques for PTSD (16740177, 17267924).
CBSM includes where applicable:
- Didactic sessions explaining the how stress affects the body physically
- Increasing awareness of stress and your unique stress response
- Learning how thoughts influence feelings
- Learning how to change unhelpful thoughts to more productive thoughts
- An opportunity to practice new skills in a supportive group environment
- Coping skills training
- Assertiveness training and anger management
- Making the most of your social network
- Training in 10 different relaxation techniques, including deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, autogenics, meditation, and guided imagery
- Weekly homework assignments and relaxation practice
TFCBT includes:
- Techniques that makes use of trauma-focused cognitive, behavioral, or cognitive-behavioral methods
- Facilitating the participant to identify and challenge distorted thinking patterns in relationship to the trauma, themselves and the external world
- Exposure therapy that asks the individual to safely relive the trauma in their imagination. It can take several forms. One technique is to gradually re-expose the patient to various stimuli that were associated with the original trauma.
There are several ways that you can enjoy PNI-related cognitive behavioral therapy.
- Ten-week CBSM group sessions, 2-hours per group.
- Twelve-week trauma focused-CBT group sessions, 2 hours per group.
- Three-day weekend retreats providing Cognitive Behavioral Stress Management for:
- Kids Clobbering Cancer
- Health care providers and care givers wanting to learn CBSM techniques
- One-day retreat The Primer on Human Grief.
- Individualized programs with E-based psychotherapeutic interventions.
- Guest weekend workshops by professionals visiting Heather Hills.
Groups are usually 4 to 8 people. Workshops are small enough for individual attention and large enough for group support.
Health care providers
For health care providers (e.g., nurses, physicians, social workers, and psychologists) we offer weekend small group seminars. In these, we present an overview of PNI and applications that can directly benefit your patients. Along with the seminar, the participants are given a copy of the e-Book, Psychoneuroimmunology for the Health Sciences. If you follow the link to evidence base for health care providers, you will see a brief introduction to the literature relating PNI and CBSM.
